One Room Challenge 2018: Week 2

I’m so excited to be back for Week 2 of my One Room Challenge! This week my focus is the old saying “out with the old; in with the new”. Most of my bedroom furniture and decor are upwards of 10 years old. So I don’t feel any guilt in making some overdue changes.

Nightstands. My nightstands are actually one of the newer items in my room. I bought them from Target several years ago when everyone had to have a padded X-cross bar bench incorporated in their decor. I didn’t need a bench so I was super pumped with these. I liked that they didn’t take up much room, and the neutral tone of the wood and hardware cooled-off the darker tones of everything else in my room.

But after awhile, I wanted a little more storage space and surface space. I really only had space for a lamp and my glasses. Depending on the size of the book I was reading, I’d have to just keep it on the floor next to my bed. But I did want to stick with a simplistic looking nightstand. I started doing some basic web searching and came across these simple, brassy glass end tables. Perfect! They gave me more space to decorate, more shelving space for books and knick-knacks, and I think it’s a well-established fact that I love gold, even a brassy gold. These tables are actually all over the place so if you’re also in the market, do a little googling to find who has them the cheapest price.

Lamps. My current lamps are pretty non-descript. They were random finds at Home Goods, and if I’m totally honest with you, one hasn’t actually worked in years. I’ve just been too busy to go looking for a new one when I knew I’d be redoing my room in the near future. I liked that the lighter lampshade contrasted with the darker colors or my bedding and tied in well with the neutral color of my nightstands. But with the vision I have now, they just get lost in the mix. I wanted a lamp that was going to add some color and pazazz to the room.

I don’t know how I came across these elephant lamps. They have been a targeted ad on a website. I don’t know. But I’m obsessed. Fun fact, my maternal grandparents had a ton of decorative elephants in and around their home when I was growing up (my grandfather was a pilot for over 30 years and I guess elephants were the ideal tchotchke back in the 70s), so I love the familial tie-in. The color is perfect and fits in nicely with the pink & blue color palate I’m moving towards. And when you are close-enough, you can see the really great detail that went into these lamps. Pretty impressive considering their priced at right around $100 for the set.

Bedding. Ah my bedding. My purple, iridescent bedspread was the original piece that I decorated my room around 10 years ago. So changing it sort of kicks off this whole chain-reaction throughout the rest of the room. I actually still really like it, so I’m just going to pack it away until I have a guest bedroom in the future. Waste not, want not!

I know it’s not exactly ground-breaking, but I’m really excited to be moving to a cleaner, brighter comforter. This is also my first time with a down comforter versus something weighter like a bedspread so it’s going to take some getting used to.

Full-Length Mirror. Since the rest of the room is moving in a lighter & brighter direction, I knew I’d have to change out my beloved floor mirror. This mirror has changed apartments with me 4 times and I’m not ready to let it go. My parents just moved into a new house and are going to use my mirror until I have another use for it.

However, I did get a GREAT deal on a similar mirror at Home Goods. The new mirror is actually a lot taller and has a great bevelled and distressed frame. I’m changing up the location of the mirror just a bit, since my current one is technically hidden sometimes behind my closet door.
