Ever since moving to Georgia years ago, I’ve been a bit weary of trying this state’s version of barbecue. I’m a South Carolina Gold girl, born and raised, so if it’s not coated in a savory and sweet mustard sauce than I’m just not a happy girl. That being said, I had been wanting to try a new BBQ place around the corner from me called Smokebelly BBQ for some time because I knew they had a Carolina Gold sauce option among their many draws. So me and Victoria decided to venture out one Saturday evening and give this place a whirl. Smokebelly is a very fun and laid back environment, as one would expect from a BBQ joint, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised not only by how much I enjoyed the southern fare, but my desire to come back as soon as possible to try even more menu items.
Southern Starters
The menu had a lot to offer us so Victoria and I decided to pace ourselves with a few appetizers and drinks while we decided on our main choices. What immediately sold me on this place was the little basket of pork rinds that they bring to the table. Free chips and salsa, old news. Free breadsticks, been there and done that. Free pork rinds, yes please! The cocktails themselves were pretty powerful and should definitely be paced. We also tried the deviled eggs and I loved that they came topped with bacon. If you didn’t know already, this place is for meat lovers only.
On the Bone
Okay so I’m still thinking about and craving these ribs. They come coated in a Cherry Cola sauce, which is new to me, and they are so so good. If you only order one item at Smokebelly, these ribs are a must but be warned, the 5 served as an appetizer may not be enough. Truth be told, I didn’t want to share these babies with Victoria and I even thought about ordering a second round to take home and have again the next day.
Sauced & Tossed
Pulled pork is the hallmark of a good BBQ joint. People can argue about the sauces all day long, but at the end of the day, if the meat isn’t cooked right, your DOA. Smokebelly served their pork up right in my book, shredded and with a piece of white bread. I like to eat my barbecue as an open-faced sandwich so I loved this little accommodation. Smokebelly also understands that everyone has a favorite sauce so each table has about 6 sauces to choose from. I went with both the Carolina Gold (because obviously) and that Cherry Cola sauce that i loved so much on the ribs. I was a Georgia BBQ skeptic before, but Smokebelly has turned me into a believer now.
