Southern Fruit Water

Southern Fruit Water

Two of my favorite things in the world: living in color and spicing up the ordinary.  I found a great combo of the two in this incredibly refreshing (albeit, non-alcoholic) beverage.  It was the drink-du-jour at my best friend’s wedding shower many moons ago, and needless to say it left quite an impression.  It’s quick to make, easy to assemble, totally customizable, not to mention gorgeous in a mason jar.  What more could a southern belle ask for when hosting all of her gal pals for an evening gabfest or throwing the perfect tailgate?  “What makes fruit water so much better than regular water?” you may ask.  “I think it’s the fruit,” says I.

Southern Fruit Water

Ingredients:
1 Large Orange
1 Large Lemon
1 Large Cucumber
Thyme Sprigs

Directions:
1.  Slice orange and lemon into thin, even slices; add slices to a pitcher along with thyme sprigs
2.  Slice Cucumber length-wise; add slices to pitcher
3.  Fill pitcher to spout with water
4.  Chill for at least 2 hours or until ready to serve

Helpful Hints: Use any fruit you’d like, but a word of warning with raspberries.  They tend to turn the water red and give the beverage a kool-aid look (not that there’s anything wrong with that).  If you want to add a bit more color, try cranberries or even strawberries.  The thyme helps cut the citrus and gives the water a fuller taste.  Basil is another great herb to try in your fruit water if you’re unsure about the thyme.
