I’m calling it now; 2017 is going to be a lot of fun for the sartorially inclined.  We’re already set for the onslaught of Spring and Summer so now it’s time to look ahead another 6-7 months to what our colder months hold in store for our closets and our wallets.  A lot of the tried and true staples of the season are incorporated but in fun new ways and mixed together with pieces that aren’t so traditional for the fall and winter months (hello head-to-toe cream).  Also, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I find a way to get one of those fur-lined pieces into my possession come the end of October. 😉

Velvet was a textile that peaked through just a bit in the Spring collections, and can already be found in some retail shops, so this is a trend that you can start stockpiling now.  Just about every designer got in on the velvet game.  It’s a fabric that looks super rich and is especially gorgeous in darker hues.  I love how it can sometimes appear to have a shine or shimmer to it but is a bit better at keeping a girl warm when compared to my favored sequins and beading.

Lady in Red

Red is nothing new to this particular season, but designers were definitely punching it up a bit more with their use of the hue.  Every girl has her perfect shade of red (I mean, the song “Lady in Red” became a clichè for a reason) and every single one of those shades will be in this Fall.  I think this may finally be the year that I pull the trigger on a classic red blazer or coat to wear with all of my nautical tops and red lipsticks.

Yes!!!! I’ll say it again: Leopard is a neutral!  I absolutely fawned over all of the head-to-toe leopard looks.  And by the way, that little Kate Spade number is metallic and is already on my “Must Have” list.  Leopard wasn’t the only animal print on display either; there was also a touch of zebra, giraffe, and even a few feathers to ruffle.  But leopard was definitely the star with numerous designers going full tilt with the classic print.

I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m a huge proponent for a wide leg trouser.  I blame Katherine Hepburn.  But one of the reasons I love them so much is because they flatter so many different body types.  After years and years of the matchstick pant ruling our lives, the wide leg trouser keeps taking up more and more space on the runways and in stores with every passing season.  And lucky for me, they keep getting more and more colorful.  I’m adding a new resolution to my 2017 list: Own a pair of Fuschia or Pink trousers by year’s end.

That old saying that you can’t wear white after labor day has been inching closer and closer to extinction.  It looks like this year’s fashion scene will push it even further to the fringes.  Winter White is such a fun shade to play with and use with other pieces but I’m loving the idea of embracing it fully in a complete look of separates.  It’s so chic in a trouser and blouse pairing and even more so with a great coat to layer on top.

How the West Was Won

I think this trend is the natural next step for all of those 70’s pieces we’ve been seeing over the last several seasons.  It’s a biker meets a trucker meets the prairie and goes to NYFW type of look.  It’s probably the trend I am least likely to embrace for myself but I can at least appreciate it when it’s been well executed on others and there are certainly elements that I like (high-waisted trousers have always been good to us curvier girls).  I’ll be interested to see how this particular trend translates to retail.  Who knows, maybe this will be the year that I buy a vest…
