How To: Apply Lipstick

How To Apply Lipstick

I think it’s pretty obvious to even a casual observer of this blog that I love a bright lip.  I realize that bright lipstick can be daunting to some but I just can’t enough.  One of the many perks, at least as I have found, is it negates the use of more make-up aside from a swipe or two of mascara.  So the brighter the better I say. But applying lipstick, bright or otherwise, can be tricky.  Lips can feather, color can bleed or smear, and now you just look a mess.  So I’ve pulled together my tips for applying the brightest and glossiest lipstick, so you can get the best wear out of any shade.

Lip Exfoliant, Bright Lip Liner, Bright Lipstick, Tissue, Concealer

Fresh Brown Sugar Lip ScrubStep 1:
Exfoliate.  The first step to any good make-up routine is prepping your skin.  If you’re going to be drawing attention to your pucker, it had better be in good shape.  I like an all natural skin scrub for my sensitive skin to buff out any rough spots.

Grab your lip pencil and carefully trace the outline of your lips.  Then color in your lips using the lip pencil.  This will give the lipstick an even surface to stick too.  Now you can either go with a lip pencil in a color that closely matches the shade of your lipstick, or go with a neutral pencil that closely matches your skin color.  Either is fine.  I prefer to use color to help boost the pigment of the final product.

Take your gorgeous lipstick and slowly apply it to both bottom and top lip.  Resist the urge to rub your lips together.  You want even application to the entire lip.

Take a tissue square and blot.  This will help set your first coat of lipstick.

Step 5:
Clean up any mishaps that may have strayed outside of your lip line with some concealer.  This acts as a helpful boundary that prevents any high-gloss lipstick from bleeding and looking smeared.
