Over the past year, I have been incredibly fortunate to be working with a new group of women who are actively trying to change the perception of fashion in my fair city, Atlanta. Admittedly, Atlanta will never reign as a true fashion capital. Why? Simple.
Atlanta has a fashion marketplace not a fashion industry. The city has successfully positioned itself as a shopping destination, and although this has been great for high-end retailers and consumers, it creates a fragmented infrastructure for fashion in Atlanta. The city fails to capitalize on its other wealth of resources – the resources that make up a true fashion industry. Instead of coming together, fashion professionals in Atlanta work independently –striving to reach the same goal, but competing against each other. Atlanta has everything to make a full-fledged fashion industry, but it lacks cohesion. For Atlanta to transition from marketplace to respected industry, the Atlanta fashion community must work to bring together its rich roster of designers, retailers, stylists, media professionals, photographers, manufacturers, wholesalers and educators. They must collaborate to provide a platform for the city’s emerging talent. The talent is already here, but they need a city-wide network. This is where RAGTRADE Atlanta comes in.
RAGTRADE Atlanta was created by a group of local industry professionals who are passionate about developing a vibrant and globally recognized fashion community for the City of Atlanta. Their goal is to discover and promote independent designers by providing a space for fresh talent to showcase their designs to leaders and key influencers in the fashion community. More importantly, RAGTRADE Atlanta serves as a model representation of the much-needed collaboration amongst the city, fashion professionals and the community at large. RAGTRADE Atlanta is bringing the business of fashion to Atlanta.
On August 23rd, RAGTRADE Atlanta will be holding it’s inaugural Runway show at the W Hotel – Buckhead. This is a huge event for the fashion community here in Atlanta as it will be showcasing the best and the brightest of it’s emerging fashion talent.
